Recover IIS Passwords

I know I haven't posted anything in a long time, and I'm sorry for that but I've been in the final stages of launching a million-dollar software / hardware system that I designed and it's been absorbing way too much of my time lately. The system is fronted by a set of load-balanced Web servers, and while configuring those the other day (I used the IIS backup and restore feature to configure the subsequent servers after getting the first one up and running) I ran into a problem whereby I had to reset the username that IIS used to execute (when you restore configuration settings from one machine to another, the local user gets restored along with everything else). Of course, when you do this, you have to enter the password for the account, and who knows that information off the top of their head?

Fortunately, you don't have to know the password - you can use a tool included with Windows to retrieve it. Here's a link to a Microsoft article explaining how to do this. If you're not using NT 4.0 (anyone out there still running that dinosaur?) then make sure that you pay particular attention to the blurb about editing the " Adsutil.vbs" file so that the password appears in plain text.

I'll be back posting more now, I swear - and it won't all be just links to other people's articles. The MVP Summit is coming up in April, so I'm sure after that I'll have plenty to talk about - especially if I get brainwashed into installing the latest nightmare programs from Microsoft while I'm there (yes, I am STILL regretting upgrading to Vista and Office 2007).
